BŁĘDOWSKA DESERT
The largest desert area in Poland - the Bledowska Desert - is the result of human activity, i.e. the mass clearing of local forests. It covers an area of about 33 km2 on the border of the Silesian Upland and the Olkuska Upland.
The desert is included in the Natura 2000 protection program and is a real natural curiosity. Here you can meet interesting species of plants of sandy, warm and dry habitats, as well as rare species of insects adapted to life on sand. A specific oasis is formed by the valley of the Biała Przemsza River, flowing through the desert area. The area reveals the most beautiful landscape in spring and summer, when the spring pentacles or sand thyme bloom. For many years the Bledowska Desert has been used as a training ground.
In the "Polish Sahara", where still at the beginning of the 20th century there were desert storms and the phenomenon of fatamorgana, the shooting of the films "Pharaoh" and "In Desert and Wilderness" took place, but today, unfortunately, the area is overgrown and works are carried out to restore its desert character. The panorama of the desert can be observed from vantage points: the Czubatka hill in Kluczy (382 meters above sea level) and Dabrowka in Chechle (355 meters above sea level).
